I found myself in a shop, surrounded by the Japanese tea set. The products were superb. But a huge "why me?" as far as the shopping was concerned. I wouldn't say it was a bad day really. I have always thought that seeing the silver lining in every dark cloud is the way to go. I hardly ever say that my day didn't go well when people ask. So, I'll just put it this way - wandering around, aimlessly looking for anything is not my idea of a fun time. As a matter of fact, if vampires were attacking the town, and the mall were the only safe place, I may just offer my throat up and give up garlic on my pizza pies. All that being said, there I was.

Positivity is becoming a forgotten art. Having a bad mental attitude only serves to make everything worse. Searching for random goods is the bane of my life. But when you consider the big picture, looking for the perfect Japanese tea set is light on the bother scale. Being annoyed isn't a definite state. There are plateaus involved. Compare a broken TV to a broken television because it falls on your foot.
My dad was the title-holder when it came to that. Everything got to him. He walked around annoyed. I do my best to maintain a carefree attitude, but I do see a lot of the old man in me. He wouldn't tolerate an entire day of looking through the Japanese tea set though. Just thinking of it, I can hear how he would go on in my mind. There is a hundred percent chance that there would be a tizzy about not spending a minute of his day surrounded by shelves full of the Japanese tea set. The particular item was irrelevant. He would have gotten that way over anything at all, from an electric razor to a coat. There wouldn't be any difference. The fact that he was in a store at all was all it took to set him off. I have never once seen him willingly or easily shop. It was ridiculous.
Even though I can't help sharing some of his feelings on the subject, I am better about it than he is on his best day. If anything is needed around the house, I have been known to go get it. Sometimes even without any urging involved. I think it would be downright foolish to get all bent out of shape over a Japanese tea set. I remember that my mom and dad had a spat over something of that nature once. I must have been about 8 at the time. It wasn't major, but it was enough to get my attention, even at that age. It was one of those moments when the tension had just been building for a while until one of them let loose. He was doing the driving for my mom that day, but didn't want to actually go in anywhere with her. Dad would just sit in the car with the air conditioner on and the music blasting. I guess she was looking for some company aside from me because she kept pestering him to go in with us. He just wouldn't move though.
She stuck it to him by comparing him to me, as far as loyalty goes, and telling him that I went around with her.
Even at the time, I thought that was overstating the matter. It's impossible to know for sure if children ever like the activities predetermined for them. There was just no other option, period. That might be why I am so against the practice today. For all intents and purposes, I have been brought up to not want to go to the malls for a browse. My dad's answer to her that day was likely what sealed the deal.
"That is because he's a nut!" he said. "If he wasn't, he would hate it too!"
My mom didn’t have any answer to that aside from letting out a deep sigh and yanking me into yet another place to shop. I haven't thought about that day in years. Now that I have, I am getting the abrupt impulse to forcibly make my dad shop for a Japanese tea set with me. Everyone's a comedian.
